What Would Jesus Do? We see this question on bumper stickers, magnets, t-shirts, and many other places. Does anyone actually try to answer this question? Well, I think I have the answer. He would, in this order, pray, listen, and obey. As you read the gospels, you will find that Jesus was in the habit of praying… a lot. Then, rather than do what many of us do over our food, toss out a prayer and move on, he listened to what the Father said.

In John 5:19-20 Jesus stated that he “So Jesus said to them, ‚ÄúTruly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.” This suggests that Jesus not only spoke to God, but listened for answers. Jesus then obeyed, without question, those instructions.

Each of us is capable of doing these things. Since we are not sinless, we will not do so perfectly, but this is truly the standard. I suspect that we underestimate the meaning of Jesus being “fully human”. We assume his knowledge of people was because he was “fully God”, yet we know he set his divinity aside. Jesus acted within the limits of humanity. His knowledge and power came from obeying God, listening to God, and being empowered by the Holy Spirit. After Pentacost, we see the disciples operating in the same mechanism of prayer, listening, and obedience. This is what we are called to do as well. See Mat 10:19-20, “When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
